Cowboy Church

A new Christian movement is growing in the American South and Southwest. "Cowboy church" pastors say that their simple services, Western décor and adjacent rodeo arenas are bringing in worshipers who thought they didn't like church.

Cowboy churches are local Christian churches within the cowboy culture that are distinctively Western heritage in character. A typical cowboy church may meet in a rural setting in a barn, metal building, arena, sale barn, or old western building, have its own rodeo arena, and a country gospel band. Baptisms are generally done in a stock tank. The sermons are usually short and simple, in order to better to be understood by the parishioners. Some cowboy churches have covered arenas where rodeo events such as bull riding, team roping, ranch sorting, team penning and equestrian events are held on weeknights.

Many cowboy churches have existed throughout the western states for the past forty or fifty years, however just in the past fifteen or so years has there been an explosion of growth within the “movement”. Prior to 1980 there were no less than 5 cowboy churches in Texas, now the number exceeds 200, and there are an estimated 750 nationwide. There has been no definitive group that established the movement; rather it seems to have had a spontaneous beginning in diverse areas of the country at nearly the same time. Some of these cowboy churches are an outgrowth of ministries to professional rodeo or team roping events, while the roots of many can be traced back to ministry events associated with ranch rodeos, ranch horse competitions, chuck wagon cooking competitions, cowboy poetry gatherings and other “cowboy culture” events.

The Color Turquoise

The Color Turquoise

The meaning of the color turquoise is open communication and clarity of thought.

Turquoise helps to open the lines of communication between the heart and the spoken word. It presents as a friendly and happy color enjoying life. In color psychology, turquoise controls and heals the emotions creating emotional balance and stability.

Turquoise is a good color to wear or surround yourself with this color in your home or bedroom. This color has more to do with feeling (emotions) and creative expressions.

The Southwest Native Americans inspired the most popular styles of jewelry and art.

The oldest mine of any kind on the North American continent is just south of Santa Fe, New Mexico, dates back at least 2000 years. Native American Pueblo peoples dug deep into the stony ground using antlers and stone mauls to bring up the precious turquoise.
To the Pueblos and the Navajos, turquoise is sacred, takes its color from the sky, and
symbolizes the supreme, life-giving and healing power of the Creator. Originally, the peoples of the Southwest carved turquoise into beads or animal fetishes or overlaid it onto wood, bone, or shells.
The Spanish introduced silver mining, smelting, and smithing technology in the sixteenth century and the Native Americans combined their knowledge of silver and turquoise to create stunning pieces.
Around 1920, turquoise jewelry became popular in western United States. Tourists coming to see the Grand Canyon and the Southwest bought the jewelry from the Navajo Indians and brought it home as souvenirs. By the 1940's, it had become very popular, mainly in the western United States and soon after throughout the country. Turquoise is as popular today.

Visit our website for a great selection of Turquoise Jewelry. All handmade and some rare pieces of turquoise used in the jewelry.
